The Standard reported that six people were confirmed dead and that the AMREF aircraft had lost radar and radio contact shortly before crashing. The aircraft was headed to Hargeisa.

Citizen Digital confirmed two fatalities on the ground in addition to four onboard. They noted that several residents were injured and the crash caused a fire in a residential building.

Notes & Additional Context On Thursday, 7th August 2025, a Cessna Citation XLS air ambulance operated by AMREF Flying Doctors departed from Wilson Airport, Nairobi, on a medical evacuation mission to Hargeisa, Somalia. Just three minutes into the flight, air traffic control lost both radar and radio contact with the aircraft.

The jet crashed into a residential building in Mwihoko, near Githurai 45, causing a massive explosion and fire. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by flames and heavy black smoke rising from the crash site. Emergency responders including the Kenya Defence Forces, Red Cross, and National Police Service rushed to the scene.

All four AMREF medical team members on board—two pilots and two medical personnel—died in the crash. Additionally, two civilians in the affected house were killed, and several more were injured. The aircraft was completely destroyed.

According to a report by Viral Tea, the aircraft was equipped with a full intensive care unit (ICU) and advanced medical support systems for air evacuations. AMREF Flying Doctors confirmed the aircraft involved was 5Y‑FDM, and stated that investigations are underway.

The Star Kenya shared photos from the crash site showing heavy damage to the house and debris from the aircraft strewn across the neighborhood.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Air Accident Investigation Department have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the AMREF air ambulance crash. AMREF has pledged full cooperation and is supporting the families affected by the tragedy.

Notes It is reported that the aircraft was enroute to Mbaruk Airstrip after departing Wilson Airport, Nairobi. Witnesses near the crash site reported seeing the aircraft flying overhead before it disappeared into cloud. A loud bang was then heard as the aircraft collided with hilly terrain in the expansive Kedong Ranch in Naivasha. Instrument Meteorological conditions existed at the time of the crash. The 74 year old private pilot and his wife died in the accident.

Investigations
Notes It is reported that the aircraft which was on a training mission came down on the Malindi – Mombasa highway, a few minutes after take off, under unknown circumstances. Post crash fire destroyed the airframe. Three people on the ground – two motorcyclists and teacher (pillion)- lost their lives. One of the casualties is reported to have been burnt beyond recognition. The occupants of the aircraft escaped with minor injuries and were rushed to Tawfiq Hospital, Malindi.

Notes Eye witnesses reported seeing the aircraft veering off the runway during the take off run. The plane ended up in a ditch within the airstrip grounds with all the 10 passengers and one crew exiting safely. The airframe suffered damage to the power plant, propeller and landing gear.

Investigations The Kenya Air Force dispatched an Air Accident Investigation Team to the accident area to establish the cause of the crash.
Notes The Kenyan Chief of Defence Forces had earlier in the day left Nairobi in one of three helicopters to visit troops deployed in the North Rift area under the Operation Maliza Uhalifu and to also inspect the ongoing school renovation works in Chesitet Primary School, Cheptulel High School, Cheboton Primary School, Saa Primary School and Saplimoi Primary School. These schools had been closed following bandit attacks. The CDF’s entourage departed Chesitet for Kainuk Forward Operating Base, Turkana County where he addressed troops. From Kainuk FOB the team proceeded to Chesegon, West Pokot where the CDF launched the rehabilitation of Cheptulel High School. The CDF’s helicopter then departed Chesegon for the Recruits Training School in Uasin Gishu County where he was scheduled to inspect construction facilities at the institution. The helicopter however crashed shortly after take off. The airframe was destroyed by the post crash fire. Among the 10 that perished was the Kenyan Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla. The two survivors were airlifted by another KDF aircraft to hospital.

Investigations
Notes It was reported that the helicopter appeared to loose power on lift off and crashed back onto its skids. Online pictures of the accident show the helicopter largely undamaged except for the skids. The aircraft was carrying -among others- Kenya’s Roads and Public Transport Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Kipchumba Murkomen and Kenya Airports Authority chairman, Mr. Caleb Kositany who had attended a funeral at Torongo area in Baringo.

Investigations Preliminary Midair Collision Accident Report Involving 5Y-SLK and 5Y-NNJ
Notes The aircraft had a mid air collision with another aircraft after take off from Wilson airport. Occupants heard a loud bang and the pilots elected to return to the field to investigate the matter. The aircraft landed without incident and was found to have damage to the leading edge of the horizontal stabiliser. All 39 passengers and 4 crew were unharmed. An instructor and a student in the other aircraft involved in the accident, however lost their lives.

Investigations Preliminary Midair Collision Accident Report Involving 5Y-SLK and 5Y-NNJ
Notes The aircraft had a midair collision with another aircraft just after departure from Wilson Airport. It then crashed into the adjacent Nairobi National Park killing both occupants- a male instructor and a female student pilot. The airframe was totally destroyed. Investigations into the crash commenced.

Notes Reports indicate that the aircraft had just taken off from Kiunga Airstrip when it hit power lines and crashed into a stand of trees. On board were two pilots, 7 military officers and 1 police officer. All on board escaped with nil/minor injuries. It is also reported that the aircraft was returning to Nairobi after dropping off students who had performed well in the County- and had recently been flown to Nairobi by the same aircraft, sponsored by an area leader. All the occupants were initially treated at Kiunga Hospital before being transferred to Nairobi The airframe was completely destroyed by the post crash fire, with explosions thought to be bullets being heard.

Notes A 35 year old man died on the spot after being struck by a helicopter tail rotor at Masalani area, Ijara Sub County, Garissa, Kenya. The deceased is said to be the deputy head teacher of Masalani Primary School and was involved in the distribution of KCSE examination papers in Garissa County, Kenya. Reports indicate that the teacher was rushing to board the helicopter when he was struck on the head and right hand by the helicopter’s tail rotor. Personal effects including a laptop, a mobile phone and examination materials were strewn at the scene. Following the incident, the tail rotor broke off from the aircraft. The aircraft is one of two helicopters which were tasked with the distribution of examination papers in the Garissa and Tana River Counties following heavy rains which have made road transport impossible. This is the third incident involving helicopters in Kenya, in less than 48 hours.

Notes The aircraft was transporting relief food to communities affected by the el Nino rains and associated floods. Videos show the aircraft take off from one such area. On transition to forward flight, the helicopter appears to loose control and spin backwards, impacting the ground in slight right bank. The airframe suffered substantial damage with all the rotors blades breaking and the tail boom shearing off from the fuselage. This was the second helicopter crash on this day, in Wajir County.

Notes The aircraft was on a mission to distribute KCSE examination papers when it crashed shortly after take off. The three occupants – two pilots and a passenger -were injured during the accident: Captain Kiroken (head injuries), Captain James Ndirangu (shoulder and hand injuries) and Arbajahan MCA, Mr. Abey Jimaale (head injuries). Reports say they were rushed to Wajir County Referral Hospital and then transferred to Nairobi in stable condition. The airframe however suffered substantial damage. The examination materials were loaded onto a different helicopter for distribution to intended exam centres. This was the first helicopter crash on this day, in Wajir County.

Notes The aircraft was on a training mission when it crash landed into the compound of Guara Primary and Junior Secondary School, Gakawa Ward, Kieni East, Nyeri County, Kenya. It subsequently hit a classroom wall head on leading to substantial damage. The instructor and the student pilot were taken to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. The operator of the aircraft -Mount Kenya Flight School- is based at Nanyuki Civil Airport which is a few metres to the south west of the accident area.

Notes The aircraft made a belly landing after the landing gear failed to extend. The plane had earlier circled the airport many times apparently to burn most of the fuel onboard. This was a training flight and the two occupants -an instructor and a trainee- were initially rushed to the hospital for check up.

Notes The aircraft suffered a bird strike during take off causing damage to one of its engines- with flames being observed on the right side. The subsequent emergency aborted take off led to deflation of 11 of the 16 main landing gears. Foam was sprayed on the landing gear. The incident caused closure of the single runway JKIA airport for close to 7 hours as airport personnel rushed to obtain spare tyres to replace the damaged ones and over 100 tonnes of cargo were offloaded. The aircraft was eventually towed off the runway with no further damage. Notes Apparently the aircraft was on approach to land at Kampi ya Samaki Airstrip along the shores of Lake Baringo Kenya. Due to unknown circumstances, it crashed onto trees near the fence of Sandai Resort which is directly under the approach path to the airstrip. The pilot (who is also the owner of the aircraft) and his sole passenger suffered injuries and were rushed to Marigat Sub County Hospital for medical attention. The airframe was written off.

Notes Among the passengers was former 2X Olympic and World 800 metres champion David Rudisha. He had just attended the annual Maasai Olympics event at Kimana Wildlife sanctuary, Kajiado South. Another passenger, Mr. Steven Ole Marai, chairman of the Kenya Masters Athletics, had to be transferred to the Nairobi West Hospital from Makindu Hospital, after suffering injuries to the ribs.

Notes The aircraft apparently crashed while on an operation to round up/ drive out cattle from the Tsavo East National Park. The pilot, Mr. Mark Jenkins (a former warden of Meru National Park) and his son Peter Jenkins (a game warden), sadly lost their lives during the accident. Mr. Mark was a well known conservationist and bush pilot. His father Peter, was also a game warden in the ‘60s. Prince William paid tribute to Mark describing him as a friend who dedicated his life to protecting wildlife in East Africa.

Notes A student was performing the seventh solo touch and go at the Nyaribo Airstrip, Nyeri. The previous six touch and go’s had been performed without incident. On the seventh landing, the aircraft veered to the left of the runway on touch down. The aircraft impacted trees with the left wing and came to rest on sloping ground. The leading edge of the left wing suffered damage as well as the windows. The propeller tips struck the ground and became bent. The outboard portion of the right wing also suffered damage as it impacted the ground. The Investigation ruled that the incident was the result of the student mismanaging the landing causing the plane to veer off the runway and impact trees and terrain.

Notes The aircraft was on its take off roll when it veered to the left and struck a tree with the left wing tip. Notes The aircraft was on the last lap of a private three leg mission (Nairobi, HKNW- Kisumu HKKI – Eldoret HKEL – Nairobi HKNW). On descent to landing- from FL250 to FL100- it encountered severe icing conditions. The wings picked up heavy ice which the the pilot attempted to clear with deicing gear without success. The left engine then quit followed by the right engine. This forced an emergency landing at a horse race course. The left wing impacted trees and sheared off during the roll out. The three occupants were unhurt.

Notes The aircraft had been chartered to ferry Marsabit County officials from Marsabit town, Kenya to a peace keeping mission at Ileret, Kenya. It had earlier departed Wilson Airport, HKNW at 0820 hours and arrived within the vicinity of Marsabit Airport,HKMB at 1000 hours. On approach to landing, the aircraft impacted the top of Kofia Mbaya hill, and came to rest inverted. The two pilots suffered fatal injuries while the airframe was written off. The area around Marsabit town experiences heavy fogging in the early morning hours, thus reducing visibility and this could have been a contributing factor to the accident. This was the latest accident in the area involving controlled flight into terrain during approach to land.

Nature of the incident, damage to the aircraft The aircraft had departed Tatu Airstrip at 1140 hours and arrived over Laragai House Airstrip at around 1240 hours. While attempting to land with a tail wind, it floated for a long distance before touching down near the end of the runway. On realising that the plane could not slow down and stop within the remaining runway length, the pilot elected to do a go around. The aircraft however stuck a tree at the end of the runway -which it could not be able to clear -and crashed. The airframe was totally destroyed

Notes The aircraft landed long after floating for a considerable distance -probably due to a tailwind. On realising that he could not stop within the remaining runway distance, the pilot elected to do a go around. The plane was however not able to clear a tree at the end of the runway. It struck the tree and crashed leading to total destruction of the airframe. The pilot and his wife (who were the only occupants) suffered serious injuries. The passenger suffered bruising on the face and had a broken wrist, while the pilot suffered a broken tibia (bone).Quick response from eye witnesses who were at the airstrip to receive the plane led to quick evacuation of the occupants and transfer to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital.
